Archaeologists Discover Ancient IPv4 Address Tee

192.168.1.1 sits in a museum case under reverent lighting, and the placard confirms what every network engineer already knew: it was still in use when they found it. It's always still in use.

IPv4 launched in the early 1980s with about 4.3 billion addresses, which seemed like plenty at the time. The internet ran out anyway, back in 2011, right around when the shift to IPv6 was supposed to pick up speed. Meanwhile 192.168.1.1, the default gateway on seemingly every router made in the last thirty years, just keeps doing its thing on equipment that was due for replacement a while ago.

IPv6 has been around since 1998 with 340 undecillion addresses to spare. The transition is still ongoing. 192.168.1.1 is still in use.
